Griffin Archers Outdoor Season begins at the very beginning!

Archers shooting in the sunshine

It’s a very good place to start!

We are at the time of year when Archery starts its “Outdoor” season. The weather has been beautiful here at Rockingham Forest Park, @RFP, and we have started our season well.

Sunset shooting at the range

Wednesday 2nd April saw the reintroduction of our evening members sessions. It was a lovely session, with a special appearance by “Goose” the springer spaniel. Keith was setting up his new Compound Bow. It was one of those sessions that happened, and before you realised, it was time to pack up and go.

Easter has arrived …

Saturday 5th, and the Easter School Holidays. This meant we had some Holiday makers come along and do some archery with us. Lots of fun and lollipops were had by all.

Griffin members brought their tools and carried out some much-needed maintenance, ready for the outdoor season. All in all, a successful spring day!

Sunday morning and the coaching team descended on Rockingham ready for our first complete Beginners Course this year. 12 candidate archers, plus 2 returners attending for a refreshers course. It was a very busy blend of coaching, supervising and enthusiasm. All the candidates are keen and we have a variety of ages and abilities. John, our senior coach was using his wheelchair when needed, and Robyn was leading the course.

Much laughter and keen competitive spirits ensued – new enthusiasm quickly turned in to a full line of targets.Griffin members arrived and the range became populated. Shooting and Griffin family camaraderie took over as the Beginners course concluded. After 3 hours of more information than any of the candidates had expected. They all departed happy, but tired. (just the 6 more hours to go!)

Drama on the shooting line

Drama on the shooting line – we saw Keiths string come off his new bow. He and John did battle with the clubs “Emergency Bow Press” to reassemble the string and gears correctly and safely. We managed to fit in a taster session for Peter’s daughter. Robyn managed to do her first Level 2 coaching session with her candidate archer, Tom. All in all, a normally chaotic, productive, outdoor session! Almost like it never slowed down over winter at all.

By 4 pm it felt like a long day – having been there since 10am. So packing away and getting ready to go home was definitely the way forward. Let’s just say we all slept well that night!
